Special Educational Needs - S.E.N
At St Anne’s Catholic Primary School we work together to identify and support children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Once a child has been identified as needing additional support an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is written with specific targets for that child. The implementation of the IEP is the responsibility of the Class Teacher often in conjunction with a Teaching or classroom Assistant.
If a child’s progress continues to concern us then the school will ask for advice and guidance from outside agencies such as the Educational and Psychological Assessment Service, Behaviour Support, or Speech and Language Therapist.
Within our school, the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) is responsible for co-ordinating the day to day operation of the SEN policy.
At all stages parents are fully involved and informed, and play a key role in supporting their child’s educational development. The teachers monitor and assess each child’s progress regularly, so that there is early identification of any learning difficulties and this enables us to set targets, differentiate work or put help in place specifically to meet each child’s needs. These targets are reviewed regularly, and parents are encouraged to contribute to these reviews and target setting sessions.
The school SENCO also has the opportunity to seek the advice of the Learning Support Team and the Educational Psychology Service. These are additional agencies whose advice may be sought if a more specific need arises or further advice is needed. On these occasions we ensure that parents are invited or kept fully informed of any meetings or assessments that have been arranged on their behalf and copies of any reports are forwarded to them.
Some children may present with needs that a Statement of Special Educational Need is required, which will provide further advice and support and highlight the child’s needs in detail.
We encourage a close working partnership with the parents of children with SEN, as we believe that this provides the most effective support. The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) is available by appointment to discuss progress or any concerns parents may have. However, any initial concerns regarding progress, must, in the first instance be discussed with the child’s class teacher.
We endeavour to identify children with special educational needs as early as possible. Any concerns we have, are shared with parents and then together we decide how best to support the child, or, in the case of a more able child, how to challenge and extend their gift or talent. Our children will usually be supported within the general classroom situation but may be able to work in small groups for short periods of time with either the class teacher or teaching assistant.
The assistance of the Educational Psychologist and other Learning Support Services will be sought if necessary. Pupils with statements of special educational need are provided with a Special Needs Assistant to support them in the classroom, using funding provided by the LEA. Overall, we want our St Anne’s pupils to fulfil their potential intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially – to be independent and enthusiastic learners and to develop a love of learning, regardless of the barriers that stand in their way.
